In the common positive circulation drilling, it is the surface washing medium ── clean water, mud or polymer washing liquid in a certain pressure, through the high-pressure hose, faucet and drill pipe column center hole straight to the bottom of the drill, in order to cool the drill, will cut down the debris removal and transport to the surface of the purpose.

Commonly used mud pump is piston or plunger type, driven by the power of the pump crankshaft rotation, crankshaft through the crosshead to drive the piston or plunger in the pump cylinder to do reciprocating movement. Under the alternating action of suction and discharge valves, the purpose of pressing and circulating washing liquid is realized.

According to the number of cylinder classification of the pump, there are single cylinder, double cylinder, three cylinder, five cylinder and other types.
